Motivation is defined as the drive to do work. Just to begin with, it would be an agony if one has to drag his feet to work every day. Customers will notice the difference whether one is passionate about his work or is in the business simply to earn a living.
Would any of us patronize a shop or firm if we were disappointed in its products, service or that it failed to deliver? Definitely a no-no. Henceforth, staying motivated is an essential ingredient in professional success; regardless of whether someone is selling real estate or putting labels on cans of baked beans.
The factor of motivation is what makes things happen in both of these positions, though quite different. What creates motivation in individuals is as varied as the people themselves; some people have a strong desire to succeed, some people seek approval from others, and still others are motivated simply by the fact that they will be paid for their efforts.
To me, motivation goes far beyond monetary or professional gain. What motivates me to come to work every day would be the ability to extend a helping hand or at least offer a listening ear to the aged, helpless or the disillusioned.
In my course of work, I am able to meet people from all walks of life. I enjoy talking to such people, making friends, learning about the various cultures and looking at life itself from their perspectives.
Or maybe it’s the infectious laughter of my endearing colleagues who never fail to bring a smile to my face. Seeing their faces light up with excitement and beaming with happiness just makes my day.
But how do we stay motivated at work? We need to possess optimism, an outlook on life such that one maintains a view of the world as a positive place. We need to believe that people and events are inherently good, so that most situations work out in the end for the best.
A common conundrum illustrates optimism-versus-pessimism with the question; does one regard a given glass of water, filled to half its capacity, as half full or half empty? First of all, we need to see the glass as half filled and then add positive, productive action to that optimism.
This is when truly amazing things can happen. We need to seek new challenges and not let ourselves get into a rut with the regular tasks we have to complete every day.
For example, we can learn a new skill that will improve our job performances or add value to the company. This will lead to promotions, pay bonuses and respect from your peers.
Quote I live by till date are, “Work your way up or rust your way out” - Holton Buggs “I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live” George Bernard Shaw
It can truly be said that enthusiasm is contagious; in fact, without the contagious nature of enthusiasm in my colleagues, the world would be a truly dull place.
